Ted Lasso returns to Apple TV on 5 August with a new team, a new cast and a three-year wait finally over

Ted Lasso is coming back. Apple TV confirmed on Monday that the fourth season of its most decorated comedy will premiere on 5 August, with one episode followed by weekly releases every Wednesday through 7 October.

The announcement, made by Apple chief executive Tim Cook alongside the first teaser trailer, ends more than three years of uncertainty about the show's future after the season three finale in May 2023 appeared to close the book on Jason Sudeikis' relentlessly optimistic American football coach turned English football manager.

In season four, Ted returns to Richmond but takes charge of a second-division women's team rather than the men's side he guided to a Premier League title.

"Ted returns to Richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women's football team," Apple said.

"Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would."

Emmy winners Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Jeremy Swift all return, alongside Juno Temple and Brendan Hunt, while new additions include Tanya Reynolds, Faye Marsay, Tracy Ullman in an undisclosed role, and Grant Feely as Ted's now-teenage son Henry.

Several previous regulars are notably absent from both the trailer and the press materials, with no mention of Phil Dunster's Jamie Tartt, Toheeb Jimoh's Sam Obisanya, Nick Mohammed's Nate Shelley or Anthony Head's Rupert Mannion.

The first three seasons collected 61 Primetime Emmy nominations, with the show winning Outstanding Comedy Series twice and individual acting awards for Sudeikis, Waddingham and Goldstein.

Season one set a record as the most Emmy-nominated freshman comedy in history.

Filming began last summer and the fourth season adds Emmy winner Jack Burditt as showrunner alongside Sudeikis, who continues as star and executive producer.

Seasons one through three remain available on Apple TV, which is priced at $12.99 per month or available at a discount through the Apple One bundle.

The recap

  • Apple TV announces Ted Lasso season 4 arrival this summer.
  • Premiere will launch with one episode, then weekly releases.
  • Apple said the season follows Ted coaching a women's team.
