WeRide and Uber have together launched commercial robotaxi operations in downtown Abu Dhabi, extending service to central routes between Corniche Road and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

The expanded service operates across Khalifa City, Masdar City and Rabdan, and runs routes between Corniche Road and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with endorsement from the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC).

Riders using the Uber platform travelling to or from the new areas may be matched with a WeRide Robotaxi GXR through UberX or Uber Comfort, or book via the dedicated Autonomous option on the app, the companies said in an announcement.

Public commercial operations are underway with a vehicle specialist on-board as part of a phased approach towards fully driverless operations, and Tawasul Transport is the main fleet operator providing fleet management services.

The expansion brings the service to approximately 70% of Abu Dhabi’s core areas, and the fleet has quadrupled in size since starting operations in December 2024, they highlighted.

Thursday's announcement also noted recent milestones such as he Middle East’s first Level 4 fully driverless Robotaxi commercial operations, launched in November on bu Dhabi's Yas Island. That feat came as WeRide secured the world’s first city-level fully driverless Robotaxi permit outside the US, in October.

Now, in February, the companies commit to deploy at least 1,200 Robotaxis across the Middle East by as soon as 2027.
