Universal's UK park gets government boost

Universal Studios' theme park business has revealed more details of plans for its first UK resort, to be built on a 192-hectare former brickworks site just south of Bedford, with gates expected to open in 2031.
The development is projected to support 28,000 jobs, with 20,000 during construction and 8,000 for ongoing operations. It could contribute nearly £50 billion to the UK economydetails, according to estimates from the project.
In its inaugural year, the park is anticipated to welcome up to 8.5 million visitors.
To accommodate increased travel demand, the British government has allocated £500 million for transport improvements, including £270 million for rail upgrades and £200 million for road enhancements.
Network Rail’s £300 million (VAT-inclusive) pipeline notice covers the expansion of Wixams station from two to four platforms, with procurement set for December and construction running from February 2027 to November 2030.
Universal has, meanwhile, started a local staffing programme, pledging to advertise roles first to residents of Bedford and its surrounding areas.
