UK rail strikes to hit May bank holiday travel

The UK rail network is set for fresh disruption during the upcoming May bank holiday, as the Aslef union has declared a train drivers strike.
The industrial action will impact the operations of 16 UK rail companies starting the day after the bank holiday - with the strike proposed from Tuesday May 7 and to Thursday May 9.
It is the latest in a longstanding dispute over pay.
The strikes will also coincide with an overtime ban from May 6 to May 11, potentially extending the disruption.
The strikes are set to impact a broad range of operators, including Greater Anglia, Thameslink, and Northern Trains among others.
Aslef noted that it has repeatedly engaged with the rail companies and government bodies without reaching a satisfactory agreement, and, offers from the rail companies have been dismissed by the union as inadequate.
During the strike days, significant disruptions are anticipated across the UK's rail network, affecting commuter and regional services. The British public is advised to plan travel accordingly and expect cancellations and delays during the period.
Explore Bias:
Media reports generally focus on the impact that the strike will have on the public, including the disruption for commuters and for the economy.
Some outlets also focus on the grievances and justifications put forward by the Aslef union - indeed, some reflect pro-union sentiments, emphasising the lack of pay raises and highlighting the union's willingness to negotiate.
Workers unions are typically polarising subjects, and, media coverage can be susceptible to both discreet and less discreet forms of political bias.
