UK petrol prices up sharply in 2024, motorist groups call for action
Fuel prices in the UK are up by 10p per litre since January 2024, leading to an average increase of £5.50 per tank.
The surge is being blamed on geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which cause the underlying price of crude oil to rise.
Britain's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), is meanwhile being urged to investigate what's being called a 'postcode lottery' that sees significant differences in prices at different locations across the UK.
There are also some calls for action on the 'profiteering' of fuel retailers.
The RAC, a membership group for motorists, says there's a need for regulatory actions to address what it described as unfair pricing and high margins by retailers.
