Uber and Waymo rolls-out Atlanta robotaxi collab
Uber and Waymo have launched fully autonomous rides to the public in Atlanta.
This marks marking the latest phase of the commercial robotaxi partnership between the ride hailing app and the AI-driving vehicle firm.
Waymo and Uber are partnered in Austin, Texas, and now launching in Atlanta, it adds to Waymo's growing footprint - which also includes self-driving cars in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami and Phoenix.
The new Waymo-Uber launch comes in the same week as Elon Musk's low-key debut of a Tesla's 'robotaxi' operations, in Austin, Texas.
The Uber-Waymo joint venture in Atlanta is live, accessible via the Uber app, and operating across a 65-square-mile area.
A self-driving car can be allocated to UberX, Comfort or Comfort Electric trips, with customers paired with a Waymo vehicle, specifically a fully autonomous electric Jaguar I-PACE.
Customers can choose in the app whether or not to accept the autonomous ride, or switch to a human-driven vehicle.
Waymo is integrated directly into Uber’s app interface, allowing customers to unlock the vehicle, open the trunk, and start the journey without additional downloads.
Pricing matches equivalent human-operated rides, and more than 100 Waymo vehicles are already active on the platform in Austin.
Waymo currently provides around 250,000 paid rides per week ain the United States.
