Tether has expanded support for its digital assets USD₮ and Tether Gold (XAUt0) inside MiniPay, the self-custodial wallet developed by Opera and built on the Celo blockchain.

The integration enables users to hold, send and receive USD₮ with a single tap, bypassing the typical complexities of blockchain-based transactions. Tether said USD₮, which has a market capitalisation of over $186 billion, is the most widely used digital dollar globally.

Paolo Ardoino, chief executive of Tether, said, “Tether’s mission has always been to provide simple, reliable access to stable value for people who need it most. By supporting USD₮ and XAUt0 in MiniPay, we’re helping create tools that make digital assets genuinely useful, whether for sending money, saving in dollars, or protecting value in gold.”

Jørgen Arnesen, executive vice-president of mobile at Opera, added, “Integrating USD₮ directly into MiniPay turns smartphone reach into real financial access. Millions of users are now holding, sending, and saving in digital dollars seamlessly, often for the first time.”

Opera said MiniPay now counts more than 12.6 million activated wallets and 3.64 million on-chain users. In the fourth quarter of 2025, MiniPay’s on-chain user base grew 50%, with 7 million phone-verified USD₮ wallets and 300,000 unique USD₮ buyers recorded in December alone, a 33% increase month on month.

MiniPay users initiated more than $96 million in USD₮ stablecoin transfers in December and completed over 3.5 million peer-to-peer payments. Across all integrations, more than $153 million was sent or received through the wallet in the same month.

Tether noted the platform is non-custodial, and services such as on-ramps and off-ramps are provided by third parties, including Fonbank, Partna, Daimo, Cashramp, Binance and Bybit. Celo’s native USD₮ chain saw user growth of 506% year on year, rising from 825,000 to 5 million users.

The Recap

  • Tether and Opera added USD₮ and XAUt0 to MiniPay.
  • MiniPay has 12.6 million activated wallets on Celo.
  • Users added over $49 million in cash via partners.
