Sunak splits opinion with plan to beat Britain's 'sick-note' culture

Rishi Sunak has unveiled plans to reform the system that handles so-called 'fit notes', aiming to combat what he described as the UK's "sick note culture."
Unlike a sick note from a doctor, confirming a person is unfit for all work, a 'fit note' is alternatively intended to detail tasks that the person is capable of doing.
The British Prime Minister expressed concerns that the current practice, primarily managed by GPs, often overlooks what individuals are able to do despite their health issues.
His government proposes that specialised workers and other health professionals take over this responsibility to provide more focused assessments of people's 'fitness to work'.
It comes after statistics that show a significantly larger number of people are now out of work due to long-term sickness, with data showing this has worsened since the pandemic.
Sunak claims changing the 'sick note' system will reduce social welfare costs and also help integrate more people into the workforce, by focusing on their capabilities rather than limitations.
However, the proposals have met with substantial criticism.
Experts in healthcare and opposition party politicians argue that the changes may undermine the nuanced understanding that GPs have of their patients' health conditions. Additionally, they raise concerns that the new approach could lead to reduced support for individuals genuinely unable to work, particularly those with mental health issues.

Media reports focus heavily on the economic aspects of the proposed changes, with many echoing the government's perspective. There is a significant emphasis on the number of people on long-term sick leave and the costs to the public purse.
But, the criticism from health professionals and advocacy groups suggests a need for a more balanced view, and place an emphasis on the potential impacts on vulnerable people.
