Stripe completes acquisition of Metronome to deepen usage-based billing capabilities
Deal brings advanced metering and billing technology into Stripe’s platform as software businesses increasingly shift to consumption-driven revenue models.
Stripe has completed its acquisition of Metronome, a company specialising in orchestrating billing for complex usage-based business models.
Stripe said Metronome is a leader in handling sophisticated metering and billing requirements, particularly for software and artificial intelligence companies where pricing is tied directly to consumption rather than fixed subscriptions.
Scott Woody, chief executive officer of Metronome, said the deal significantly expands the company’s ambitions. “By joining Stripe, we’re expanding our ambition significantly. Together, we’re building the foundational monetization infrastructure for the next generation of software: systems that are flexible, data-driven, and capable of supporting everything from two engineers in a garage to the largest global enterprises,” Woody wrote on LinkedIn. He added that customers will benefit from deeper partnerships, faster product development and a more powerful, integrated platform spanning Metronome and Stripe.
Stripe co-founder and chief executive officer Patrick Collison said usage-based pricing is set to become a defining trend for the software industry. “We believe the shift toward usage-based models will be a defining feature of the next decade for our industry. Metering and billing are in a very direct sense the interface between product and business,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

Collison highlighted Metronome’s existing customer base, noting that its metering engine already powers billing for some of the most demanding AI-driven businesses, including OpenAI, Anthropic and NVIDIA. He said Stripe plans to integrate Metronome’s capabilities into the Stripe Billing platform.
The acquisition strengthens Stripe’s position in enterprise billing and monetisation as more companies adopt flexible, usage-based pricing to align revenue with how customers actually use software and AI services.
