Spotify is introducing Prompted Playlists, a feature that allows Premium users to shape algorithmic recommendations by writing prompts that define what they want to hear.

This new feature will kick off with a limited beta, starting 11 December in New Zealand.

The music streaming company, in an announcement, said the feature is a way to give listeners more control over personalization.

Prompted Playlists will use a listener’s entire Spotify history to apply user-written rules and keep playlists fresh through daily or weekly refreshes.

"But now we’re entering a moment where you don’t just listen to Spotify, you control it," said Gustav Söderström, Spotify chief product officer.

The feature will show descriptions and context for each song and offer an 'Ideas' menu with starter prompts.

Users can request specific constraints such as duration, energy level, time ranges, and inclusion of recent film and TV music.

The company said the beta experience will evolve as it scales to more listeners and that the feature is intended to surface music to the right listeners and open new ways for artists to deepen fan bases.
