Sony shutters London video game studio as it lays off 900 staff

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the business unit that stands over Playstation, announced it will lay off approximately 900 employees, around 8% of its global workforce.

Whilst the layoffs impact multiple studios, it notably includes a complete closure of Sony's London Studio and as well as cuts at Firesprite in Liverpool.

It is part of a broader restructuring effort at SIE as it attempts to adapt to the fast-evolving gaming industry and position the company for future technological developments.

These are the latest layoffs across the tech and media industries - echoing broader redundancies in the economy amidst higher interest rates and constraints on disposable consumer spending.

Some media reports emphasise the impact on the employees and the gaming community more generally, painting a somewhat negative picture of Sony's decision.

Others reports frame the layoffs in the context of wider business trends and the competitive nature of the tech industry, which some readers may feel downplay the impacts.
