Scaling Founders UK has called for a renewed national focus on founder quality, arguing that weaknesses in how entrepreneurs are assessed and developed are holding back the country’s startup ecosystem.

The organisation said the UK has made progress in areas such as access to funding, attracting talent and building innovation infrastructure, but lacks a consistent framework for evaluating or improving founder readiness at scale.

Scaling Founders said raising founder quality requires a systemic approach based on shared standards, evidence-based methodologies and long-term measurement. It plans to launch a “Founder Index” aimed at helping governments, investors and ecosystem builders better understand and improve founder capability over time.

“Capital, technology and ambition are easy to fund. Founder capability isn’t. Until we invest in it deliberately, we’ll keep building fragile ecosystems and be surprised when outcomes fall short,” said Alex McNab-Lundbäck, co-founder of Scaling Founders UK.

The organisation said further details on the methodology behind the Founder Index and related initiatives would be shared in the new year. Scaling Founders said it operates across Europe, the UK and South Africa, and that more information is available on its website.
