Reddit tests verified profiles
Limited alpha trial adds grey checkmarks to help confirm identities.
Reddit is running a limited alpha test of verified profiles that add grey checkmarks next to usernames.
The company said in a statement the feature is voluntary and opt-in, aimed at individuals and businesses that wish to confirm their identities and help redditors identify experts, celebrities, journalists and brands in moments when verification matters.
For the initial test Reddit selected a small, curated group of public figures and trusted partners. For individuals the test places a grey checkmark next to usernames across profiles, communities, feeds, post detail pages and search results and grants access to Reddit Pro with a visible entry point on profiles, according to the release.
For businesses the existing official watermark will be replaced with the grey verified checkmark, and profile flairs will be tested to highlight posts such as AMAs or announcements. Accounts that receive verification must continue to follow existing community and platform rules, and users cannot request verification at this time, the release said.
