Perplexity, the AI-powered search company, has opened pre-orders for an iPhone version of its Comet browser, with the app due to launch on 11 March on devices running iOS 18 or later.

Comet for iPhone is listed on the Apple App Store with a pre-order page, with the browser positioned as an AI-powered personal assistant and thinking partner offering unified search, instant context, and automation across websites.

Comet is already available for Mac, Windows, and Android, with the Android version having launched in November last year.

An iPad version does not yet appear to be ready for release alongside the iPhone launch.

Rather than functioning as a conventional browser, Comet integrates Perplexity's AI directly into the browsing interface, allowing users to ask questions about the content of any webpage, request summaries, and automate tasks such as shopping and scheduling without switching between applications.

Users will be able to choose which AI model powers their browser, with options from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and others available.

The iPhone version will be free to download, with Perplexity Pro and Max subscriptions available as in-app purchases ranging from $4.99 to $200.

Perplexity first launched Comet to a limited release on 9 July before making it available to everyone worldwide, describing it as the most sought-after AI product of the year during its waitlist period.

The company describes Comet as a browser built for today's internet, arguing that existing tools remain primitive relative to how people now use the web to work, connect, and seek answers.

The iPhone launch puts Perplexity in direct competition with Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome, which together dominate the mobile browser market.

The recap

  • Perplexity lists apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, macOS, Windows.
  • Each platform entry shows a "Download" option on the site.
  • Comet Browser listed for macOS, Windows, Android; iPhone pre-order.
