PayPal Brings One-Click Payments to Perplexity’s AI Shopping Experience
Research, compare and check out inside a single chat window. E-commerce may never look the same again
PayPal has plugged its entire merchant ecosystem into Perplexity, allowing U.S. users to move from product research to purchase without leaving the AI assistant’s interface.
The integration went live on 25 November and marks a major step toward AI-native commerce flows.
The move builds on the companies’ earlier strategic partnership. Michelle Gill, PayPal’s general manager for small business and financial services, said the goal is to connect PayPal’s trusted payments and buyer protection directly to AI-powered shopping.
In practice, that means users can now ask a question, browse relevant merchants and complete checkout within the same conversational thread.
To encourage adoption, PayPal is offering 50 percent back on a user’s first Perplexity purchase, up to $50, through 1 December. It is an incentive designed to familiarise shoppers with the idea of AI-guided commerce.
Inside Perplexity, PayPal functions as the transaction engine. Purchases happen instantly, with no redirects or traditional checkout pages.
Dmitry Shevelenko, Perplexity’s chief business officer, said consumers and merchants increasingly expect smoother digital shopping in an era shaped by AI.
Perplexity’s broader mission is to bridge traditional search and real-time AI answers, and its scale is rising quickly.
The service handles more than 150 million questions each week, drawing from verified sources and including citations. Integrating commerce into that flow signals Perplexity’s ambition to evolve from a research tool into a transactional platform.
PayPal, with more than 25 years of experience powering global online payments, sees AI-driven retail as the next frontier.
The Perplexity partnership positions it at the centre of an emerging shopping model where discovery and checkout merge into a single conversation.
