OpenAI said it will start testing ads for logged-in adult users in the US on the free tier and the ChatGPT Go subscription. The company said its Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free.

ChatGPT Go, which launched in 171 countries in August, is also being expanded to the US. OpenAI said the service will cost $8 a month and is aimed at users who want extra features at a lower price point than its premium plans.

The company said it has set clear principles for advertising on ChatGPT. Answers generated by the system will remain independent from ads, advertisers will not have access to user conversations, and users will retain control over how their data is used. Ads will be clearly labelled, shown separately from regular answers and can be dismissed.

In early tests, ads will appear only at the bottom of responses when there is a relevant sponsored product or service. OpenAI said it will not show ads to accounts it knows or is told belong to people under 18, and it will avoid placing ads alongside sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health or politics.

OpenAI said the testing will take place over the coming weeks and months. It added that it will gather feedback and refine how ads are shown, with an emphasis on maintaining user trust and the overall value of the product.
