OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT on Pentagon's secure AI platform
A tailored version of the chatbot will be available to three million military and civilian personnel
OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, will place a customised version of its chatbot on GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense's secure enterprise artificial intelligence platform.
The system will be available to three million civilian and military personnel for unclassified work, running on authorised government cloud infrastructure with built-in safety controls and protections for sensitive data.
OpenAI said data processed on GenAI.mil will remain isolated and will not be used to train its public or commercial models.
The company said the models deployed on the platform incorporate safeguards at both the model and platform level to promote robustness, reliability and lawful use.
ChatGPT is designed to support a range of day-to-day tasks aimed at strengthening readiness and mission execution.
These include summarising and analysing policy documents, drafting and reviewing procurement and contracting materials, generating internal reports and compliance checklists, and supporting research, planning and administrative workflows.
OpenAI said it is joining other frontier AI laboratories on GenAI.mil, the Department's centralised platform for generative AI tools.
