OpenAI tests ads in ChatGPT
The tech giant is testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers in the U.S.
OpenAI is beginning a test that will show ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. to logged-in adult users on the Free and Go tiers.
The company said in a statement that Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers will not have ads. It said the test aims to fund broader access to higher-quality free and low-cost options while keeping the product fast and reliable.
“Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you,” the company said. It added that ads will be clearly labeled and visually separated from organic answers, and that ad selection will match advertiser submissions to conversation topics, past chats, and past interactions with ads.

The company said advertisers will receive only aggregate performance metrics, such as number of views or clicks. It said ads will not be shown in accounts where users tell the company or it predicts they are under 18, and ads are ineligible near sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health, or politics.
Users can upgrade to Plus or Pro to avoid ads, or opt out of ads in the Free tier in exchange for fewer daily free messages, the company said. It said users can also dismiss ads, share feedback, delete ad data with one tap, and manage ad personalization at any time, and invited businesses interested in advertising to visit openai.com/advertisers.
