OpenAI signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy to deepen collaboration on AI and advanced computing in support of DOE initiatives, including the Genesis Mission.

The company said the MOU establishes a framework for information sharing and coordination and creates a path to discuss and develop potential follow-on agreements as specific projects take shape.

OpenAI said the agreement builds on prior collaborations with DOE national laboratories, where it convened a 1,000 Scientist AI Jam Session across nine labs, deployed frontier models in research settings, and placed advanced reasoning models on the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory for use by researchers across NNSA laboratories.

“We’re excited to collaborate with the Department of Energy and contribute to the Genesis Mission. When frontier AI meets the expertise of the national labs, it opens up new ways to explore ideas, test them faster, and accelerate scientific progress,” Kevin Weil, Vice President of OpenAI for Science said.

The company said it also partnered with Los Alamos to develop evaluations of multimodal AI in laboratory settings and submitted recommendations to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, describing 2026 as a “Year of Science.”

The Recap

  • OpenAI signed an MOU with the U.S. Department of Energy.
  • Frontier models deployed on the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos.
  • Company filed recommendations to the White House OSTP, citing 2026.
