OpenAI has released a new 'State of Enterprise' AI report that outlines how large organizations are adopting its technology and how workers say it is affecting their day-to-day work.

The report, released by the AI firm on Monday, draws on deidentified and aggregated usage data from OpenAI’s enterprise customers and a survey of 9,000 workers at almost 100 enterprises to benchmark how AI is being deployed, where value is emerging and how integration is changing over time.

OpenAI said weekly messages in ChatGPT Enterprise have risen about 8 times over the past year, with the average worker sending 30% more messages, while use of structured workflows such as Projects and Custom GPTs has grown 19 times year-to-date.

The average reasoning token consumption per organization - in other words, how much "thinking" is being done by AI - has increased roughly 320 times in 12 months, the ChatGPT creator said.

Across surveyed firms, 75% of workers report that AI has improved the speed or quality of their output, with the time savings reported by OpenAI amounting to 40 to 60 minutes per day. This reached in excess of 10 hours per week for heavy users.

Some 75% of those surveyed said they can now complete tasks they previously could not perform.

The AI company highlighted rapid growth in usage across sectors including technology, healthcare, manufacturing, professional services and finance.

It added that international business customer bases in Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands and France each exceeded 140% year-over-year growth, while international API customer growth is above 70% over the last six months.

Japan has the largest number of corporate API customers outside the US, it noted.

OpenAI said its data shows “a widening gap between ‘frontier’ workers and firms, and the median,” with frontier workers at the 95th percentile sending 6 times more messages than the median employee and frontier firms sending twice as many messages per seat and integrating AI more deeply across teams.

The recap

  • OpenAI publishes state of enterprise AI report using internal data.
  • ChatGPT Enterprise messages up 8×; reasoning tokens up 320×.
  • Seventy-five percent of surveyed workers report faster or higher-quality output.
