In profile terms, it is a major hiring coup for OpenAI, even if George Osborne is unlikely to be earning anything close to the eye watering packages paid to the superstar coders of the AI world.

The former Chancellor is joining the ChatGPT maker as managing director and head of OpenAI for Countries, a new London based role that will oversee the group’s dealings with governments. The unit is designed to work with states on how they adopt and regulate artificial intelligence, and how the benefits of the technology are shared.

To take up the job he is leaving his post as a senior managing director at investment bank Evercore. It is the latest addition to a busy portfolio that includes chairing the British Museum, co-hosting the Political Currency podcast and advising cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase.

Since quitting Parliament in 2017, Osborne has moved across media and finance. He edited the Evening Standard newspaper and has held senior roles with BlackRock and boutique advisory firm Robey Warshaw, which later became part of Evercore.
