NVIDIA reveals Earth-2 open weather models
NVIDIA unveiled Earth-2, a family of open models, libraries and frameworks for weather and climate AI at the American Meteorological Society’s Annual Meeting.
NVIDIA unveiled Earth-2 at the American Meteorological Society’s Annual Meeting, offering open models, libraries and frameworks for weather and climate AI.
The chips and AI company, in an announcement, said the suite is the world’s first fully open, accelerated weather AI software stack and includes pretrained models, frameworks, customization recipes and inference libraries that accelerate all forecasting stages.
Nvidia added that Earth-2 Medium Range, powered by the firm's Atlas architecture, produces forecasts up to 15 days ahead across 70+ weather variables and outperforms leading open models on standard benchmarks.
“NVIDIA Earth-2 models give us a 90% reduction in compute time at 2.5-kilometer resolution compared with running a classic numerical weather prediction model without AI on a CPU cluster,” said Amir Givati, director of the Israel Meteorological Service.
Earth-2 Nowcasting, powered by StormScope, uses generative AI to produce kilometer-resolution, zero- to six-hour forecasts of local storms and hazardous weather and, the company said, outperforms traditional physics-based models on short-term precipitation forecasting by simulating storm dynamics directly.
Earth-2 Global Data Assimilation, powered by HealDA, generates initial atmospheric conditions in seconds on GPUs instead of hours on supercomputers and, when coupled with Medium Range, yields the most skillful predictions from an entirely AI pipeline, the firm said.
The Earth-2 stack also includes Earth-2 CorrDiff and Earth-2 FourCastNet3, integrates open models from ECMWF, Microsoft and Google, and supports training and fine-tuning with NVIDIA PhysicsNeMo, the company said.
