NFL to launch more exciting new kick-off rules

The NFL is making a major change to the start of every game, with new kickoff rules now agreed for the 2024 season.

The changes aim to inject some life into what is typically a procedural play that many broadcaster don't even air.

It is introducing the new "hybrid" play which will see the kicker kick off from the 35-yard line, similar to current rules, but, the other on-field player positioning change dramatically.

The kickoff team's players will line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line, while the receiving team will position at least seven players within a "setup zone" between their 35- and 30-yard lines, and two returners may position themselves in the designated "landing zone", behind the 20-yard line.

This setup reduces the run-up for the defenders, and other tweaks aim to incentivise the receiving team to run the ball in return.

Every ball that lands in the "landing zone" requires a mandatory return, whilst changes to the 'touchback' rule mean the receiver is encouraged make the return.

The new rules are in for a one year trial, after NFL team owners voted 29-3 in favour.

The change is said to be inspired by similar rule strategies implemented in other, second tier, professional football leagues, like Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson's XFL, which aim to make kickoffs safer and also more engaging.

Explore Bias:

Media reports generally emphasise the increasing scrutiny on player safety.

Some outlets particularly highlight the league's commitment to player safety and the reduction of injuries, especially concussions, as the primary motive.

Other reports focus more on the details of the new rules and the tactical adjustments teams will likely have to make - reflecting some novelty and excitement over the potentially dynamic new phase of play.

Nonetheless, most outlets convey optimism about the new rule's potential to enhance the game.
