Microsoft to spend $5.5 billion in Singapore

Microsoft is on track to spend $5.5 billion on cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure and ongoing operations in Singapore from 2025 through 2029, the company said in an announcement, and will provide every tertiary student with free Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot.

The package was unveiled by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith during a keynote at Asia Tech x Inspire and accompanies an expansion of Microsoft Elevate programs to deliver free AI training for educators and upskilling for nonprofit leaders.

Under the plan, Microsoft Elevate for Educators will roll out in Singapore to build classroom confidence in responsible AI use, while Microsoft Elevate for Changemakers will offer free AI readiness credentials for nonprofit leaders. The company said the investment will also support cybersecurity, resilience and trusted governance as part of broader efforts aligned with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0.

“Our ongoing investment in cloud and AI infrastructure reflects Microsoft’s long-term confidence in Singapore as a global digital leader,” said Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft. Microsoft also cited LinkedIn data showing demand for AI literacy skills in Singapore has risen more than 70% year-on-year, and referenced the Microsoft Research AI Economy Institute’s AI Diffusion Report that ranks Singapore second globally.

Microsoft said the five-year commitment aims to strengthen education, workforce readiness and social impact systems so more people can learn, work and thrive in the AI economy, with the company continuing to deploy cloud and AI operations across the 2025–2029 timeframe.

The recap

  • Microsoft will expand AI and cloud infrastructure in Singapore.
