Microsoft has announced it will allocate £320 million ($400 million) towards expanding its cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Switzerland.

The investment, confirmed during talks between Microsoft’s Vice Chair Brad Smith and Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin in Bern, is aimed at enhancing the capacity of local data centres and fostering closer collaboration with Swiss research institutions.

Microsoft currently maintains a workforce of around 1,000 employees in Switzerland, and this new funding is expected to bolster opportunities for AI specialists and engineers within the region.

By channelling resources into state-of-the-art facilities, Microsoft seeks to support Swiss universities and businesses in developing advanced AI applications, while reinforcing data sovereignty and compliance with stringent European regulations.

The initiative underscores the company’s broader strategy to deepen its presence in Europe amid mounting global competition for artificial intelligence expertise.

Swiss officials anticipate that the project will generate new roles and stimulate technological innovation across multiple sectors.
