Microsoft invests more than $1 billion in Thailand

Microsoft said in an announcement it will invest more than $1 billion in cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure and ongoing operations across Thailand from 2026 to 2028, following a meeting in Bangkok between Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The announcement builds on a partnership that began with a landmark MOU in November 2023 and subsequent visits by CEO Satya Nadella and Microsoft Asia President Rodrigo Kede Lima, and marks a new delivery phase focused on infrastructure, trust and talent.

Microsoft says the funds will support a Thailand cloud region built to the company’s global standards for performance, reliability and sustainability, including green energy and water positivity; strategic partners named include Gulf Development Public Company Limited, Advanced Info Service, Charoen Pokphand Group, True Corporation and True Internet Data Center (True IDC).

The company also framed AI diffusion as a policy priority, noting the divide between advanced economies and developing regions where AI use remains lower.

On governance and local capacity, Microsoft highlighted work with Thai institutions, including the Office of the Council of State on TH2OECD, an Azure OpenAI legal analysis system, and a new collaboration with the United States Trade and Development Agency that begins with a $950,000 USTDA grant and $250,000 in Microsoft Azure credits to Ai-ssistance for aCommerce.

“As the cloud and AI become central to economic growth and national competitiveness, countries need both access to world‑class technology and the know‑how to put it to work,” said Brad Smith, Microsoft Vice Chair and President.

Microsoft said its talent efforts have reached over 2 million people with AI skills in the past 2 years, and include the National Digital Learning Platform covering more than 600,000 high school students, Microsoft Elevate programs, and a partnership with the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development to upskill and certify 150,000 workers with 280 Thai-language AI courses.

The recap

  • Microsoft commits over $1 billion to Thailand cloud and AI.
  • Partnership includes Gulf Development, Advanced Info Service, CP Group.
  • Programs will upskill 150,000 workers via Department of Skill Development.
