Microsoft and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) will bring artificial intelligence fluency and digital skills learning to millions of South Africans through the broadcaster’s SABC Plus platform.

The partnership forms part of Microsoft Elevate and builds on the company’s AI Skills Initiative, which aims to train one million South Africans by 2026.

Microsoft said it has already engaged four million learners, trained 1.4 million individuals and issued credentials to nearly 500,000 citizens.

“AI can be a powerful bridge to opportunity,” said Tiara Pathon, Microsoft Elevate AI Skills Director for South Africa.

“By partnering with SABC, we aim to embed digital and AI skills into the daily lives of millions of South Africans. Democratising AI skills is not just a goal – it is our responsibility to shape a more inclusive digital economy.”

SABC Plus, which has just over 1.9 million registered users and around 25% active users, will host integrated AI fluency modules, digital literacy pathways, assessments and co-branded digital badges for learners.

“As South Africa’s only public broadcaster, the SABC has a mandate to inform, educate, entertain and empower our citizens,” said Lungile Binza, chief operations officer of the SABC. “This partnership with Microsoft strengthens our commitment to delivering relevant, future-facing learning at scale, while also investing in the development of critical skills in the broadcasting industry.”

The companies said SABC Plus, the largest free-to-air internet-based platform in Africa, will serve as a national hub for accessible educational programming focused on the digital economy.

The memorandum of understanding builds on Microsoft Elevate programmes, including Ikamva Digital, ElevateHer, Civic AI and the Youth Employment Service 50K Certification Programme.
