Telecoms group to embed Google’s Gemini models across European operations under five-year agreement

Liberty Global, the multinational telecommunications company, has signed a five-year strategic partnership with Google Cloud to integrate artificial intelligence tools across its operations in Europe.

The companies said the agreement will embed Google’s Gemini AI models into Liberty Global’s services, devices and television platforms, aiming to enhance user experience for approximately eighty million customer connections across the continent.

It support AI-first initiatives focused on network scalability, security, data sovereignty and operational efficiency.

The companies said they will explore deploying Google Cloud services within Liberty Global’s data centres to manage excess customer demand and build autonomous network operations that detect and resolve performance issues with minimal manual intervention.

Mike Fries, chief executive of Liberty Global, said: “Our expanded partnership with Google Cloud represents a significant milestone for Liberty Global as we continue to innovate and enhance the experiences we offer our customers and drive substantial value creation for all our stakeholders.”

“By harnessing the power of AI and cloud technology, we are not only modernising our infrastructure but also creating new revenue opportunities and products that will benefit millions of consumers across our operating companies,” he added.

The announcement said the collaboration extends existing work between the companies, including projects with data centre joint venture Atlas Edge, electric racing series Formula E and technology platform Liberty Blume.

Formula E recently named Google Cloud its “Principal Partner” and “Official AI Partner” of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

The companies said they will also explore go-to-market strategies for small and medium-sized enterprises, data monetisation opportunities and distribution of Google products through Liberty Global’s operating businesses.
