Kitten heels, polka dots and jelly flats: Google data reveals a full-blown nostalgia wave in spring fashions

The fashion world appears to be raiding its mother's wardrobe this spring, with Google search data showing a surge of interest in retro styles that would have looked entirely at home three decades ago.

Polka dots have reached an all-time high in search interest in 2026, with "polka dot coat" the most popular related query over the past month.

Capris, the cropped trouser style that dominated the early 2000s before falling out of favour, have also hit record search levels, as has the lace top, a staple of 1990s going-out wardrobes now apparently staging a full comeback.

Searches for "lace midi skirt" sit at a 10-year high.

The footwear data tells a similar story.

Kitten heels, the low-heeled shoe synonymous with early-2000s red carpets, have reached an all-time search high, while ballet flats and Mary Jane shoes are both at five-year peaks.

The most striking mover is "jelly flats", which surged 360% in the past month, suggesting the translucent plastic sandal last seen in bulk at 1990s seaside shops is making an improbable return.

Accessories are following suit, with searches for "chunky necklace", "cuff bracelet" and "silk scarf" all reaching record levels in 2026.

The nostalgia wave extends into hair, nails and makeup.

The "Italian bob", "modern shag" and "bixie", a hybrid of a bob and a pixie cut, are all trending hairstyle searches, while "French tips" have hit an all-time high and "polka dot nails" are at a 10-year peak.

Taken together, the data suggest that spring 2026's dominant aesthetic is less about innovation and more about rediscovery, with shoppers reaching back to the late 1990s and early 2000s for a look that prizes femininity, pattern and a degree of playfulness over the minimalism that defined recent seasons. The recap

  • Search interest in retro fashion reached multiple record highs.
  • Jelly flats searches rose 360% in the past month.
  • Google suggests using Search to explore these fashion trends.
