Instagram is expanding its 13+ content rating and Limited Content controls to Teen Accounts in India, the company said in an announcement, updating what teens see by default on the service.
The move aligns Instagram’s teen guidelines with movie ratings for ages 13+, the company said, and aims to make the platform’s recommended content closer to what a 13+ movie audience would encounter.
Instagram said it has refined technology to block or hide more material it considers age-inappropriate. Under the changes, teens will not be able to follow or interact with accounts the company has identified as regularly sharing inappropriate content, and those accounts cannot follow or message teens. The company also said it will widen blocked search terms—for example, to include “alcohol” and “gore”—and will limit exposure to the restricted content in Explore, Reels, Feed, Stories and comments.

Instagram is also updating its artificial intelligence experiences so AIs “should not give age-inappropriate responses that would feel out of place in a movie rated for ages 13+,” the announcement said. The company added parents who want stricter controls can enable a new Limited Content setting, which filters more posts and removes teens’ ability to see, leave, or receive comments.
The updated settings have started rolling out gradually to Teen Accounts in India and will be fully rolled out in the coming months, the company said in the announcement.
