OpenAI and Instacart are expanding their partnership by introducing an Instacart app inside ChatGPT that lets users browse groceries, build a cart and complete purchases without leaving the chat, the companies said in a statement.

The integration connects Instacart’s real-time grocery network and fulfilment system with OpenAI’s models, aiming to move users from meal ideas to doorstep delivery in a single conversation.

Instacart is the first app to provide a checkout flow directly within ChatGPT, using the Agentic Commerce Protocol, and will surface when users ask for help with food, recipes or meal planning, according to the statement.

“Instacart and ChatGPT are redefining what’s possible in AI-powered shopping,” Instacart Chief Technology Officer Anirban Kundu said, adding that the experience “brings intelligent, real-time support to one of the most essential parts of daily life: getting groceries to feed your family.”

After connecting to the Instacart app and signing in, ChatGPT uses OpenAI models to help select items from local retailers and assemble a cart that users can review, pay for and check out within ChatGPT, with Instacart then dispatching a shopper for pickup and delivery.

“With the Instacart app directly in ChatGPT, users can go from meal planning to checkout in a single, seamless conversation,” Nick Turley, VP, Head of ChatGPT, said.

The new app builds on Instacart’s existing use of OpenAI APIs, ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI’s Codex for customer-facing features and internal workflows, and extends OpenAI’s broader enterprise collaborations with companies including Accenture, Walmart, Salesforce, PayPal, Intuit, Target, Thermo Fisher, BNY, Morgan Stanley and BBVA.

The recap

  • Instacart app now lets ChatGPT users shop and check out in-chat.
  • Integration uses Agentic Commerce Protocol and OpenAI frontier models.
  • Launch extends existing OpenAI–Instacart and wider enterprise partnerships.
