How many Chinese EV brands will still be around by 2030?
Snapshot
- Only 15 of 129 EV brands will endure, Alix predicts
- But those may account for 75% of the market
China's big EV splash will ebb as a result of intense competition and overcapacity, that's according to research and estimates from global consultancy AlixPartners.
The EV and plug-in hybrid sector in China stands at 129 brands today, so if Alix is right, that will prove to be a substantial decline over the next five years.
Persisting Chinese brands will be strong enough that they'll average 1.02 million annual sales and capture roughly three-quarters of the market.
The estimate comes as China’s EV sector is grappling with a price war and capacity utilisation at just 50%, its lowest in a decade.
Aside from leading brands BYD and Li Auto, no publicly listed Chinese EV maker has posted a fully profitable year.
