Google said it is rolling out a major upgrade to its Search experience by making Gemini 3 the default model for AI Overviews globally and enabling users to ask follow-up questions directly from those summaries into an extended conversation.

Google said Gemini 3’s reasoning capabilities will now power AI Overviews (the AI-generated summaries that appear within search results) so users receive what the company describes as “best-in-class AI responses” on the page where relevant.

The update introduces a streamlined flow from snapshot answers to full conversational exchanges, letting users tap into follow-up questions from an AI Overview and continue the dialogue in AI Mode without breaking context. Google said its testing showed people preferred this natural progression from quick answers to deeper discussion.

Robby Stein, vice-president of product for Google Search, said the goal is to make it effortless to explore, access and understand information, with a “just ask anything” experience that supports both simple facts and complex queries.

Google said the feature is available on mobile globally and the interface presents a quick answer with prominent links to continue exploring or enter a conversational AI Mode.

Reports noted this change brings Search closer to an interactive assistant, embedding conversational capabilities that previously required switching tabs or entering a separate chat interface. Critics have expressed concern that generative AI in Search could reduce traffic to external websites and challenge traditional link-based discovery.

Google emphasised that AI Overviews are experimental and generated by its artificial intelligence models; the company continues to refine how summaries and conversational answers are presented to balance usefulness with accuracy.

The Recap

  • Google makes Gemini 3 the default AI Overview model.
  • Follow-up questions can be asked from AI Overviews on mobile.
  • Users can jump directly into AI Mode conversations from Overviews.
