Google brings Gemini to its Translate platform
Google is adding Gemini translation capabilities to Google Translate to improve text translation quality, introduce a beta live speech-to-speech translation for headphones, and expand language learning features.
The company said in a statement that starting today the update will roll out in the U.S. and India, improving translations between English and nearly 20 languages including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese and German across the Translate app on Android and iOS and on the web.
The company said it is launching a beta live translation experience that delivers real-time, natural-sounding translations to headphones while preserving tone, emphasis and cadence. The beta is available on Android in the U.S., Mexico and India, works with any pair of headphones and supports more than 70 languages, and the company said it will bring the feature to iOS and more countries in 2026.
The company said Translate’s language learning tools now provide improved feedback on speaking practice and a tracker for consecutive learning days. The expansion covers nearly 20 new countries including Germany, India, Sweden and Taiwan, and adds language pairs such as English to German and Portuguese plus Bengali, Mandarin Chinese (Simplified), Dutch, German, Hindi, Italian, Romanian and Swedish to English.
The company said users can try the Android beta and submit feedback via the Translate app as it refines the model and experience.
