Google is rolling out a suite of study-focused features to Gemini, its artificial intelligence assistant, designed to help students organise course materials and generate revision content from uploaded notes, lecture slides and handwritten documents.

The centrepiece of the update is Gemini notebooks, a workspace that allows users to consolidate lecture PDFs, whiteboard photographs, handwritten notes and previous chat logs into a single repository from which Gemini can produce structured study guides, flashcards and custom practice exams tailored to topics the student finds difficult.

The rollout begins this week for Google AI Ultra, Pro and Plus subscribers aged 18 and over using personal Google accounts on the web, with access set to expand to mobile, additional European countries and free-tier users over the coming weeks.

Gemini can also convert uploaded notes into Audio Overviews, a podcast-style spoken summary designed for students who prefer to revise by listening, and offers a Guided Learning mode that responds to queries with open-ended questions intended to develop understanding rather than simply supplying answers.

Interactive visualisations and simulations for complex subjects are available globally to Gemini app users with personal Google accounts when selecting the Pro model, extending a feature Google introduced separately to its broader AI Mode offering.

Students can additionally use Gemini Live, the assistant's real-time conversational mode, to talk through concepts aloud, with Gemini identifying gaps in reasoning as the explanation develops.

The update also allows users to import memories, preferences and chat history from other AI applications, letting students continue revision workflows in Gemini without losing context built up in rival tools.

Google suggested prompts, including "Create a study guide based on my course materials for my exams" as starting points for interacting with the new notebook workspace.

The recap

  • Gemini adds study tools to turn notes into study plans.
  • Notebooks launch for Google AI Ultra, Pro and Plus subscribers.
  • Access expands to mobile, more European countries and free users.
