Cloudflare acquires Astro

Cloudflare will add the team behind the Astro web framework and said it plans to keep Astro open source.

The company said the team behind Astro - which is used by Unilever, Visa, NBC News and hundreds of thousands of developers to build fast, content-driven websites - will join Cloudflare to support the framework’s long-term growth.

Astro loads only the code needed to display each page, reducing reliance on JavaScript for initial rendering and helping sites with speed and search rankings - and many of the sites, which are minimally small, are hosted via Cloudflare.

“Protecting and investing in open source tools is critical to the health of a functioning, free, and open Internet,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare.

Astro already underpins platforms such as Webflow and Wix that run on Cloudflare, the company noted.

Cloudflare said it will continue to support open-source contributions through the Astro Ecosystem Fund alongside partners including Webflow, Netlify, Wix and Sentry.

“Joining Cloudflare allows us to accelerate Astro’s development faster and on a much larger scale. Astro will continue to be the best way for developers to build content-driven websites, whether they host on Cloudflare or elsewhere,” said Fred Schott, CEO of The Astro Technology Company.

The cloud company added that Astro will remain open source under Cloudflare’s stewardship and that the move aims to sustain the framework for content-driven websites.
