OpenAI has launched "OpenAI for Government", a new initiative to provide advanced AI tools to government workers and public servants in the United States.

The initiative, announced by the ChatGPT-maker, brings together OpenAI’s prior government engagements under one program.

It will include collaborations with the Air Force Research Laboratory, NASA, NIH, and the US Treasury. The initiative will provide access to OpenAI's models through secure platforms such as ChatGPT Enterprise and custom national security deployments.

A pilot program has been launched with the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office.

The contract will have a ceiling of $200 million, and its scope will include AI in healthcare access for service members, data analysis, and cyber defense.

So far in pilots, the AI tools have been used in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania which reported time savings of 105 minutes per day on routine tasks. OpenAI’s models are also in use at National Labs in Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, and Sandia to support research and security efforts.

“We are just getting started, and we look forward to helping US government leaders harness AI to better serve the public," OpenAI said in a public blog post.

"We are committed to working in close partnership with agencies, advancing their missions with powerful tools that are safe, and secure.”
