  • UK data residency option launches on October 24

ChatGPT parent OpenAI has announced a new agreement with the UK Ministry of Justice to provide civil servants with access to the chat-based generative AI chat platform.

The initiative aims to enhance efficiency and public service delivery, enabling the use of ChatGPT Enterprise by 2,500 government employees.

This follows a successful pilot that demonstrated time-saving benefits in various routine tasks.

It comes as OpenAI highlighted that the use of its AI services in the UK had increased fourfold over the past year.

David Lammy, the UK Deputy Prime Minister, said: “Our partnership with OpenAI places Britain firmly in the driving seat of the global tech revolution.”

Alongside the government deal, OpenAI said it will introduce "UK data residency" from Friday, 24 October, which will enable British customers to store their data locally.

UK government departments will use this method, with The Ministry of Justice being the first adopter.

"It’s exciting to see them [British people] using AI to save time, increase productivity, and get more done.

"Civil servants are using ChatGPT to improve public services and established firms are reimagining operations. We're proud to continue supporting the UK and the Government's AI plan.”
