Apple and Google have agreed a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models and cloud infrastructure.

Apple said that following a detailed evaluation of available technologies, it concluded that Google’s AI platform offers the most capable foundation for its future models. The company said the partnership will enable a new wave of experiences across Apple’s ecosystem, while remaining aligned with its long-standing approach to privacy and on-device intelligence.

The new foundation models will underpin upcoming Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalised version of Siri, which Apple said is due to roll out later this year. Apple Intelligence was introduced as the company’s system-wide AI layer, designed to integrate generative models across apps, services and system functions.

Apple said Apple Intelligence will continue to run directly on Apple devices wherever possible, complemented by its Private Cloud Compute architecture for more complex tasks. The company stressed that the move does not alter its privacy posture, with user data protected through on-device processing, minimised data sharing and strong encryption standards.

Google’s Gemini models are among the company’s most advanced large language and multimodal systems, designed to operate across a range of devices and cloud environments. By using Gemini as the underlying foundation, Apple is effectively outsourcing core model development while retaining control over product design, user experience and data handling.

The agreement marks a significant moment in the competitive AI landscape, bringing together two long-time rivals at the platform level. It also reflects the growing cost and complexity of training frontier-scale models, encouraging even the largest technology companies to collaborate on foundational infrastructure while competing at the product and ecosystem layer.

The Recap

  • Apple and Google launch multi-year foundation models collaboration.
  • Next-generation Apple Foundation Models will use Google's Gemini models.
  • A more personalized Siri is scheduled to arrive coming this year.
