Amazon launches 30-minute Amazon Now delivery

Amazon is launching Amazon Now, a 30-minute delivery option, in dozens of U.S. Cities, starting with Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Seattle.

The service covers items from groceries to electronics and will operate in most areas 24 hours a day, the company said in an announcement, with plans to expand to Austin, Denver, Orlando and Phoenix.

Prime subscribers pay $3.99 per Amazon Now order and non-subscribers pay $13.99; smaller orders incur an added $1.99 fee for Prime members and $3.99 for non-Prime customers.

"Amazon Now is for when you need or want the convenience of getting your Amazon order delivered in 30 minutes or less," Udit Madan, senior vice president of Amazon Worldwide Operations, said.

Customers in supported areas will see a "30-Minute Delivery" option in the Amazon app and on the web. Amazon Now joins the company's one-hour and three-hour delivery options, same-day delivery and the nascent Prime Air drone service; Amazon reported online store sales of $64.2 billion, up 12% year over year in its most recent quarter.

The company also plans to hold its annual Prime Day event next month, though exact dates remain unannounced. Walmart currently offers express deliveries under two hours and its own 30-minute drone delivery service.

The recap

  • Amazon launches 30-minute Amazon Now delivery in multiple cities
  • Prime members pay $3.99; non-Prime pay $13.99 per order
