Alibaba's artificial intelligence sourcing tool Accio is helping small online retailers identify manufacturers, cut production costs and redesign products, with the platform now exceeding 10 million monthly active users.
The tool, aimed at independent merchants in the US and elsewhere, automates a process that traditionally required weeks of browsing supplier directories, requesting samples and negotiating minimum orders.
Accio suggests design modifications, narrows candidate factories and compresses that research into days rather than weeks.
Users report concrete outcomes from the platform.
Mike McClary told MIT Technology Review he submitted details of an existing flashlight product and received a recommendation to make it smaller, switch to battery power and use a manufacturer in Ningbo, cutting unit costs from $17 to around $2.50; the redesigned product returned to sale within a month.
Richard Kostick, chief executive of cosmetics brand 100% Pure, said Accio "blows it away" compared with general-purpose AI tools.
Zhang Kuo, president of Alibaba.com, told MIT Technology Review the system draws on several frontier AI models, including the company's own Qwen series, and has been trained on 26 years of proprietary transaction data.
Suppliers are also adjusting to the platform's rise, with one Wuhan-based packaging representative noting that manufacturers are adding more detailed equipment and capability information to their listings in order to be surfaced by Accio's recommendations.

Alibaba says the tool is not currently monetised through advertising and is not integrated with paid search placements, though users can purchase additional tokens for extended conversations.
Sellers caution that Accio does not replace negotiation skills or commercial judgement, with final terms still agreed directly between buyers and suppliers.
